Senior Software Engineer II

Job Description:

This position at Walgreens is responsible for planning, designing, developing, and testing software systems and applications particularly cloud-based and online tools. The role involves complex, strategic work that influences critical processes and products within the organization. The ideal candidate is a seasoned software engineer with advanced expertise, capable of leading teams and mentoring less experienced colleagues. Independent judgment and creativity are essential for achieving short- and mid-term objectives. This role may also include tech leadership responsibilities such as setting standards, writing tech specs, and delivering quality code.

Roles and Duties:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain software systems or cloud-based applications.
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code with minimal precedent.
• Lead or contribute to complex projects with cross-functional teams.
• Mentor junior developers and review code changes for quality assurance.
• Create test plans and ensure delivery of high-quality software features.
• Drive technical decisions and champion engineering best practices such as TDD and Agile methodologies.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders to share technical insights and improve processes.
• Contribute to architectural design and develop strategies for major engineering initiatives.

Training:

This position involves ongoing mentorship and collaboration with senior engineers, access to training programs focused on cutting-edge technologies, and participation in continuous learning initiatives. Training covers areas such as cloud services, DevOps, architecture patterns, coding best practices, and system security.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field with at least 4 years of relevant experience OR a High School Diploma/GED with 7+ years of experience.
• Proficiency in programming languages used for online applications, microservices, or mobile platforms.
• Experience designing and developing moderately complex software systems.
• Hands-on experience with automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Previous experience in a leadership role or in managing cross-functional teams.
• Experience contributing to financial and strategic decisions in an organization.
• Willingness to travel up to 10% for business purposes.
